A young Howard County student and attender of our meeting will give a presentation after simple meal at noon on the United World College, which delivers “a challenging and transformative educational experience to a diverse cross section of students, inspiring them to create a more peaceful and sustainable future” (reflecting values very consistent with Quaker values). Click here for a brief introduction. This is part of UWC Day – an annual celebration of UWC’s values worldwide. 9/22/2013 at 7 pm – “The New Jim Crow” book discussion organizational meeting
Organizational meeting: Sunday, September 22, 7 p.m.
at a private home in Columbia
Please join us as we read the book, The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness by Michelle Alexander. Last year our meeting participated in the “One Book” program sponsored by the Baltimore Yearly Meeting Working Group on Racism, by reading Fit for Freedom, Not for Friendship which covered the history of African-Americans in the Society of Friends. This year the Working Group on Racism is urging us to read the book The New Jim Crow. The topic of this book is particularly applicable to those who are interested in our prison ministry.
“We need to pay attention to Michelle Alexander’s contention that mass imprisonment in the U.S. constitutes a racial caste system. Her analysis reflects the passion of an advocate and the intellect of a scholar.”
—Marc Mauer, Executive Director, The Sentencing Project
We will read and discuss this thought-provoking book over several months. Meeting times & places will be discussed at the organizational meeting.

4/28/2013, Noon – 3 pm A Springtime Cooking for Peace Workshop
Bethanne led another Cooking for Peace workshop, this one to benefit The Samaritan Women. This organization, located in Baltimore, “serves women of trauma and trafficking, to help them realize the full life that God has planned for their lives.” Amanda Grant, community coordinator for the Samaritan Women, told us that rescuing victims of human trafficking is the easy part. The challenge is to help them break free from their pimp’s chains and transition to freedom and new life.
Bethanne showed the 38 participants how to prepare raw-vegan and vegan (but not raw) foods. And we enjoyed tasting each dish! Continue reading 4/28/2013, Noon – 3 pm A Springtime Cooking for Peace Workshop
