The Advancement and Outreach Committee (A&O) helps ensure that newcomers can find our Meeting and feel welcomed. Our mission is to nurture the awareness, knowledge, and understanding of Quakerism to those inside and outside our Meeting, whether new to Quakerism or not so new. Our activities have included: obtaining signs and advertising; creating and gathering literature for the newcomer packet and literature rack; and offering study and discussion group opportunities for Friends.

Emma & Tom Byrne Peace Award

The Emma & Tom Byrne Peace Award is established to recognize Howard County students working to promote peace and peaceful resolution of conflict. The Byrnes, originally from Scotland, members of Sandy Spring Friends and Patapsco Friends Meetings, were enthusiastically involved in Peace and Conflict Resolution programs in Howard County. Of particular note is Emma Byrne’s “Peace Rap” which she performed for the youth of Howard County in schools and community events.

Many have been attracted to Quakers because of the Peace Testimony. The enthusiasm with which Friends follow their leadings to “speak truth to power” in the pursuit of peace has garnered the admiration of many. Instead of joining in actions that may lead to destruction and death, Friends urge all to cooperate to save life and strengthen the bonds of unity among all people. All are urged to create the conditions of peace, such as freedom, justice, cooperation, and the right sharing of the world’s resources, seeking not only peace with one another, but also peace with the earth.

Peace One Day is the dream of a British filmmaker, Jeremy Gilley, who proposed in 1998 that we set aside one day a year — Sept. 21 — as a ceasefire from all warfare and violence across the globe. He won the endorsement of the UN just four days before the attacks on New York on Sept. 11, 2001, and he has been working every since to make this idea of ceasefire a reality.

Check out our new brochure!

PFM_Linda_Brochure_OutsidePatapsco’s Advancement and Outreach Committee has completed the design of a new brochure and had them printed.  Copies are available at the Meeting; click here for an electronic version.

The brochure is designed primarily as an invitation to worship with us.  Friends are encouraged to take copies wherever they go and share them with prospective visitors.  We will also have them available at any public events we sponsor.

In addition, the brochure will be shared with newcomers as they arrive at Meeting.  We will also continue to have the newcomer packet available, though the committee will be considering revisions to it.  We encourage your input on what newcomers find helpful.

The brochure features photographs taken by Nony Dutton, which capture the warmth and welcome of our community and highlight our lovely worship space at Hebron House.  Meagan Healy did the graphic design.

Other Meetings are welcome to borrow from our text, just as our text borrows from others, such as the newcomer cards developed by Friends General Conference.
